Winnipeg, MB – Winnipeg Police took two young people into custody after they were caught chasing people while dressed up as creepy clowns.

Here is part of the Winnipeg Police Service News Release on the Clown Crisis:

On October 15, 2016 at approximately 8:00 p.m., members of the Winnipeg Police Service responded to the 200 block of Antrim Road in Valley Gardens, regarding a suspicious incident.

It was reported that two suspects dressed in clown costumes were chasing people in the area, one of which was possibly armed. Attending members met with multiple people who indicated that they were chased, causing concern for their safety.

Two 17 year old male suspects were located in the area of the 700 block of Kimberley Avenue and taken into custody. It was at this time, officers located clown-like masks and a large flashlight.

Although weapon related charges and mischief were considered, the male suspects were identified and cautioned in relation to their actions and involvement.

While it is legal to dress up like a clown, police warn that they may criminally charge someone if there is reason to believe they are harassing or threatening others.

The release concludes with a message to the public:

Although “creepy clown” sightings appear to be merely pranksters dressing up for the sole purpose of deliberately scaring people, however, should anyone find themselves in a similar situation and concerned for their safety, please call police immediately.

The creepy clown epidemic is having an impact far beyond Manitoba. It has even pushed McDonalds to lower the profile of Ronald McDonald – perhaps the world’s most famous clown. Some professional clowns also report a loss of business due to the bad publicity.
