WINNIPEG, MB. — Winnipeg police are looking for a suspicious man who posed as a Manitoba Hydro employee.

It comes just days after the public utility said their compound was broken into.

The thief smashed vehicle windows and made off with customer data, a uniform, and photo ID.

Island Shore Boulevard

Wednesday afternoon, the suspect knocked on the door of an Island Shore Boulevard home in Winnipeg.

He claimed he was there to check if the furnace was up to code.

The homeowner asked for his employee ID, but he said he left it in his vehicle.

He went back to an older maroon coloured car and sped off.

Suspect description

The man is described as Caucasian, 6’1″ tall, aged 25-30.

He has dark coloured hair and facial stubble.

The suspect was wearing a Manitoba Hydro jacket, shirt, and dark coloured pants.

What to watch out for

Manitoba Hydro does not conduct random furnace inspections.

You are most likely to be greeted by a meter reader.

Hydro employees will wear navy blue pants, a matching jacket or shirt, and will have either a baseball hat or toque.

They will be carrying a grey laptop and will have official identification to present upon request.
