Two Teens Charged In Pair Of Winnipeg Robberies

WINNIPEG, MB. — Two teens are facing charges after two Winnipeg convenience stores were robbed.

The first happened around 2:00pm Thursday in the 400-block of Springfield Road.

An armed robber pointed a gun at the employee before jumping the counter and stealing cash.

He obtained an undisclosed amount and fled the scene.

The second happened around 7:30pm Friday at a convenience store in the 400-block of Edison Street.

A male confronted an employee and demanded money, but he was taken down by customers in the store.

They held him until police arrived.

The first boy, 15, has been charged with:

  • Robbery
  • Armed Robbery using a Firearm
  • Pointing a Firearm
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Two counts of Disguise with Intent
  • Three counts of Fail to Comply Condition Undertaking by Judge/Justice

Winnipeg police raided a Rossmere home Saturday evening around 6:15pm and arrested a second 15-year-old boy.

They recovered a replica firearm designed to look like a semi-automatic handgun.

Police believe the second boy loaned the firearm to the main suspect.

He has been charged with:

  • Conspiracy to Commit Robbery
  • Two counts of Fail to Comply with Sentence

Both remain behind bars.

Winnipeg Man Jailed After String Of Thefts

WINNIPEG, MB. — A Winnipeg man is facing charges for a string of thefts.

Winnipeg police say it started on August 11th around 1:00am at an apartment complex in the 400-block of Westwood Drive.

The thief allegedly used bolt cutters to steal two bicycles from the building’s basement.

He then allegedly stole $200 worth of product from a grocery store in the 3100-block of Portage Avenue.

That happened on September 5th around 8:00pm.

It was followed up by a botched shoplifting on Saturday in the 500-block of Sterling Lyon Parkway.

Winnipeg police say the man attempted to steal several items worth $800.

He was stopped by a loss prevention officer on his way out the front door when he produced a taser.

The thief fled to the parking lot where he attempted to carjack a woman in her 50’s.

Two citizens and the loss prevention officer were able to apprehend him and hold the man for police.

Stefan Josef Blab, 32, has been charged with:

  • Two counts of Robbery
  • Two counts of Theft under $5,000
  • Break Enter & Theft – Place
  • Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
  • Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice
  • 6 outstanding arrest warrants

Wanted In Morden: Winnipeg’s Devan Melong

WINNIPEG, MB. — Have you seen this Winnipeg woman?

Devan Kayninn Melong is wanted by Morden police.

She allegedly failed to show up for court on a previous charge of Possess Property Obtained by Crime.

That happened back on August 29th and Melong was expected in court on September 12th.

She is still at large.

Brandon Boy Busted For Break And Enter

BRANDON, MB. — A Brandon boy is facing charges for breaking and entering.

It happened Sunday evening at a business in the 600-block of Brandon’s 8th Street.

The boy allegedly smashed an entire window and stole a small amount of cash.

Brandon police identified the accused from surveillance footage.

He was also wanted for violating a court ordered curfew back on August 16th.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged with Break, Enter and Theft as well as Breach of Recognizance.

He was detained overnight at the Brandon Correctional Centre ahead of court Monday.

The boy remains behind bars.

Mark Grant Verdict Next Month

WINNIPEG, MB – The man accused of killing Candace Derksen more than 30 years ago in Winnipeg will learn his fate next month.

Mark Hall was found guilty of second degree murder in 2011 but a new trial was granted and the verdict in that trial will be delivered October 18th.

Derksen was just 13 years old when  she went missing in 1984. Her body was found months later in a shed.

Brandon Man Charged With DUI

BRANDON, MB. — A Brandon man is accused of driving erratically while drunk.

It happened around 11:05pm Monday in the 1000-block of Brandon’s 18th Street.

Brandon police stopped the vehicle and gave the man a roadside screening test.

He failed.

The accused was arrested and transported to the Brandon Police Service where he failed two breathalyzers.

A 23-year-old has been charged with Impaired Driving and Drive Over 80 mg%.

He was detained overnight and will appear in court sometime on Tuesday.

No other information is available at this time.

3 Behind Bars For Shooting Of Winnipeg Woman

WINNIPEG, MB. — Three people are facing charges after a woman was shot in Winnipeg’s St. John’s neighbourhood.

It happened early Friday morning around 7:45am in the 500-block of St. Johns Avenue.

The victim, who is in her 20’s, was rushed to hospital in unstable condition.

She was later upgraded to stable.

A 25-year-old Winnipeg man was arrested September 17th.

Roy Lionel Laquette has been charged for the shooting and an incident from earlier this summer:

  • Two counts of Break and Enter
  • Two counts of Aggravated Assault
  • Two counts of Wear Disguise with Intent
  • Robbery
  • Assault with Weapon
  • Assault
  • Discharge Firearm with Intent
  • Two counts of Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of Prohibited/Restricted Firearm with Ammunition
  • Two counts of Possession of Firearm Contrary to Order

Winnipeg police also arrested a 20-year-old man and 15-year-old boy for the shooting on Saturday.

Winnipeg’s Rick Flett, 20, has been charged with:

  • Disguise with Intent
  • Two counts of Possess Weapon
  • Break and Enter – Commit Aggravated Assault
  • Carry Concealed Weapon – Prohibited
  • Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Break and Enter – Commit Assault

The 15-year-old suspect has been charged with:

  • Disguise with Intent
  • Assault with a Weapon
  • Two counts of Possess Weapon
  • Break and Enter – Commit Aggravated Assault
  • Carry Concealed Weapon – Prohibited
  • Two counts of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
  • Break and Enter – Commit Assault
  • Two counts of Fail to Comply Undertaking

All three remain behind bars.

Brandon Man Busted Trafficking Meth

BRANDON, MB. — A Brandon man is facing charges for allegedly trafficking meth.

It happened Monday afternoon in the 2400-block of Ottawa Avenue.

The accused was searched and police recovered a small amount of meth along with drug trafficking paraphernalia.

Brandon police also found a shotgun shell on the man despite court orders banning him from possessing weapons or ammunition.

A 41-year-old man was charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Methamphetamine and Possess Ammunition contrary to a Prohibition Order.

He was released on a promise to appear in court in November.

Ozzy Catches Suspected Vehicle Thief

WINNIPEG, MB. — Portage la Prairie police dog Ozzy to the rescue again.

He helped Minnedosa RCMP apprehend a suspected vehicle thief.

It happened September 15th around 8:00pm after someone noticed a vehicle that looked like one on social media that was reported stolen.

Police located the vehicle around 9:30pm on the shoulder of a road, but it fled as they approached.

The officer reported it to other cruisers in the area and it was located a short time later on Provincial Road 262.

The driver attempted to flee and drove into a swampy field where the vehicle became stuck.

Police surrounded the field and let Ozzy loose.

“This is the third time in just over a week that Police Dog Ozzy has helped track and capture a suspect,” says Manitoba RCMP Sgt. Paul Manaigre.

“It truly shows the value and importance of our police dogs, they are so integral to our front-line members and police operations.”

Riverton’s Jayson Alexander Balodis, 42, has been charged with Possession of Property Obtained by Crime, Flight from Police, Resisting Arrest, and Mischief.

He also faces several charges under the Highway Traffic Act.

Balodis remains behind bars in Brandon.

Man Sleeping On Winnipeg Bus Threatens Driver

WINNIPEG, MB. — A Winnipeg teen is facing charges after a disturbance on a transit bus.

It happened around 12:15am Wednesday morning near Portage Avenue and Garry Street.

The driver and a supervisor tried to wake the man. He became aggressive and threatened them both.

Transit operator Irvine Fraser, 58, was murdered on a bus back in February after he tried to wake up a passenger at the end of the night.

Winnipeg police were quick on scene Wednesday.

They determined the suspect has court orders to exit a Winnipeg Transit bus if required.

Tyrell Marquel Cornish, 18, has been charged with Utter Threats and Fail to Comply – Recognizance.

He remains behind bars.

Carman RCMP Warn Public About Thefts From Vehicles

CARMAN, MB. — Carman RCMP are warning the community about property crime against vehicles.

There has been a rash of thefts September 14th and 19th.

Police say one vehicle was reported stolen while others were rummaged through.

Numerous items have been stolen, including credit cards, ID, sunglasses, garage door openers, and cash.

All of the vehicles were left unlocked and many still had keys inside.

“These are crimes of opportunity as thieves will always look for the easiest target,” says Manitoba RCMP Sgt. Paul Manaigre.

“We need to remind motorists to always remove valuables from their vehicles, to never leave any type of identification behind, and to lock the doors.”

Winnipeg Man Accused Of Making Child Porn

WINNIPEG, MB. — Winnipeg police have arrested a Charleswood man for allegedly making child porn.

Jeffery Douglas McBride was arrested Monday after a lengthy investigation.

It began in British Columbia back in June 2016 with police there going undercover online.

McBride has been charged with Make Child Pornography, Possess Child Pornography, and Distribute, Make Available Child Pornography.

He remains behind bars.

Two Winnipeg Men Charged For Violent Robberies

WINNIPEG, MB. — Two Winnipeg men are facing charges for a string of home invasions and robberies.

On June 30, 2017, Winnipeg police responded to a home invasion that had occurred in the 700-block of Beach Avenue.

A number of suspects had forcibly entered a home and assaulted the residents.

A male in his 40’s was assaulted and sustained non-life-threatening upper-body injuries.

On July 16, 2017, Winnipeg police responded to a report of an assault that had occurred in the 500-block of Springfield Road.

Both a 26-year-old male and a 27-year-old male received non-life-threatening upper-body injuries.

On July 22, 2017, a 20-year-old male was arrested in relation to these incidents.

Christopher Rauch was charged with the following offences and detained in custody:

  • Break & Enter
  • Five counts of Robbery
  • Four counts of Utter Threats
  • Mischief Under $5,000

Peter Wilfred Flett, 26, was also identified as a suspect in both incidents.

On July 24, 2017, at approximately 11:15am, Winnipeg Police responded to a report of a robbery that had occurred in the 200-block of La Verendrye Street.

A male suspect pointed what was believed to be a firearm at residents of this location and demanded personal property.

No one was injured during this incident.

A short time later a suspect was located in the 400-block of Archibald Street.

An officer-involved shooting occurred, and the male suspect was conveyed to hospital.

Subsequent details are now part of an investigation undertaken by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.

Peter Wilfred Flett, 26, has now been charged with the following offences:

  • Flight from Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
  • Drive While Disqualified
  • Two counts of Robbery with Firearm
  • Two counts of Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Two counts of Carry Concealed Weapon / Prohibited Device
  • Use Firearm During Commission of Offence
  • Careless Use of Firearm
  • Four counts of Point Firearm
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm
  • Possession of Firearm knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Unauthorized Possession of Firearm in Motor Vehicle
  • Three counts of Possess Firearm / Weapon Contrary to Order
  • Arrest Warrant – Robbery, Assault with Weapon

Flett was detained in custody.

Two Brandon Children Steal Vehicle

BRANDON, MB. — A 14-year-old Brandon boy is facing charges for allegedly stealing a vehicle.

The blue Volkswagen Jetta was taken on Sunday.

Brandon police did not reveal the location of the theft, but did say an 11-year-old boy helped.

He was not arrested due to his age.

The older boy has been charged with Theft of Motor Vehicle.

He was released on a promise to appear in court next month.

No other information is available at this time but MyToba News will provide all updates as we receive them.

Brandon Police Investigate Two Break & Enters

BRANDON, MB. — Brandon police are investigating two break and enters.

The first happened around 11:20pm Wednesday at a home on Cornell Bay.

Police say the resident came home and found someone broke in through a window.

Jewelry, medication, and tobacco products were taken.

Garage Tools

The other happened around 7:25am Thursday at a garage in the 300-block of 7th Street.

According to the homeowner, a reciprocating saw, drill, drill bits, nail gun, and boxes of other electrical tools were stolen.

There were no suspects or witnesses reported in either break and enter.

The investigation continues.

Two Charged In Random Winnipeg Killing

WINNIPEG, MB. — Two men are accused of the Winnipeg murder of 27-year-old Trevor Bodnarek.

He was gunned down back on July 21st in the 700-block of Winnipeg’s Selkirk Avenue.

The two suspects rang the doorbell around 10:00pm.

A second person answered the door when a gun was fired. The bullet only struck the victim.

Bodnarek was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Winnipeg police say they don’t believe there is a connection between the victims or the suspects, and the case seems to be one of “mistaken address.”

Craig Dylan Monkman, 19, and Albert Kelly Thomas, 34, were arrested Wednesday.

Both have been charged with second degree murder.

Monkman and Thomas remain behind bars.

Winnipeg Police Update On Fatal Hit And Run

WINNIPEG, MB. — Winnipeg police are ramping up their search for a vehicle in a fatal hit and run.

It happened back on May 21st around 3:15am in the 300-block of Cumberland Avenue.

A 30-year-old man was struck in the eastbound lane and left in critical condition.

He later succumbed to his injuries.

Winnipeg police say the collision caused damage to the underside front-passenger bumper.

The damage would not have been visible without closer inspection.

Investigators have since surveyed all known grey-coloured 2003-2005 Honda Accords in Winnipeg.

They weren’t able to connect any of the vehicles to the killing.

Members of the auto industry are being asked to help police identify the vehicle.

Used parts stores and autobody repair shops who supplied a grey or silver-coloured 2003-2005 Honda Accord bumper shortly after May 21st are asked to come forward.

Brandon Citizen Reports Suspected Drunk Driver

BRANDON, MB. — Two people are facing charges after someone reported a suspected drunk driver in Brandon.

It happened around 1:30pm Thursday in Brandon’s downtown.

Police located the vehicle a short time later in the 800-block of Pacific Avenue.

Both the 33-year-old RM of Elton man driving and a 32-year-old RM of Elton woman were allegedly drunk.

Police say each have court orders not to communicate with each other.

The woman was charged with Breach of Recognizance and released on a promise to appear in court in November.

The driver failed two breath tests and was charged with Impaired Driving, Driving over the legal blood/alcohol limit, two counts Breach of Undertaking, and Breach of a Peace Bond.

He appeared in court Friday morning and remains behind bars.

Three Garage Break-Ins Overnight In Brandon

BRANDON, MB – Brandon Police received three reports of garages being broken-into last night.

According to police, items taken included a Craftsman socket set and impact wrench.

Sunglasses and change were also taken from a vehicle in one of the Brandon break-ins.

Brandon Police Find Meth In Car Without Plates, Arrest Three

BRANDON, MB – Two people are in custody after a traffic stop early in the morning.

At 3:23, Brandon Police pulled over a vehicle with no license plates in the 800 block of 9th St.

The driver – a 29-year-old Brandon woman, was found to be wanted on an arrest warrant and was breaching conditions. She was arrested and taken to BCC.

A 20-year-old female passenger from Erickson was arrested for breaching conditions, as she had a cell phone despite an order to the contrary.

Yet another passenger – a 20-year-old male with no fixed address – was arrested for breaching conditions of a recognizance order. The man had a backpack which contained a large amount of crystal meth, a scale, packaging material, and score sheets which indicated he was involved in trafficking.

Police also found a knife and expandable baton in the backpack.

The man was arrested and appeared in court this morning on multiple charges.
