Charges against Steven Morriseau for his alleged involvement in Jason Stinson’s death have been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Just after 5:30 p.m. on June 12, emergency personnel responded to the banks of the river in the area behind Shaw Park, where they discovered the body of Stinson, 49. It was determined that an off-duty Winnipeg Police Service member located the body near the water’s edge.

As a result of the completed autopsy, it was determined that Stinson was shot while in the area of the banks of the Red River near Lombard Avenue and Waterfront Drive (Steven Juba Park) during daytime hours on Friday, June 12.

Detectives also determined that Stinson was previously the victim of an apparent assault on June 5, 2015, at approximately 7 p.m. while near the banks of the Red River in the 900 block of Kildonan Drive. Stinson sustained significant injuries requiring medical attention.

The investigation continued by members of the Homicide Unit, who were able to identify a suspect. On the afternoon of June 25 investigators located and arrested Steven Anthony Morriseau, 29, of Winnipeg for his alleged involvement.

It was learned that on June 12, the victim and Morriseau had been in the area under the train bridge consuming alcohol. An argument between the two ended when Morriseau produced a firearm and shot the victim in the upper body.

Morriseau is currently in custody.
